Kenya’s 7s team shall be participating in the Olympics 2016 African qualifiers which will be held at the Barnard Stadium, Johannesburg on 13-14th November 2015.
This was necessitated by the re-introduction of rugby in the Olympic Games after 100 years.
The 2016 Olympic Games Sevens rugby shall feature 12 Men’s teams and 12 Women’s teams all competing for a Gold medal. Of the 12 Men’s teams
, 5 national teams have already qualified for the games .The rest of the teams among them Kenya 7s team (Shujaa) shall participate in qualifier events. The winner of the African qualifier event shall automatically qualify for the Olympic Games.
The Squad
The Kenya 7s team that will compete in the qualifier was named by the Head Coach Benjamin Ayimba. The team members are: Andrew Amonde (Captain) , Collins Injera, Frank Wanyama (Harlequins) ,Jeffrey Oluoch (Homeboyz), Eden Agero, Willy Ambaka, Augustine Lugonzo, Oscar Ayodi, Dennis Ombachi, Leonard Mugaisi, Billy Odhiambo and Biko Adema.
Other members of the technical team are: Paul Murunga ,Geoffrey Kimani,Lameck Onyango and Newton Ongalo
The schedule of Saturday’s 13th November 2015 matches
Kenya 7s vs. Mauritius , kick off at 11.00 am
Kenya 7s vs. Senegal , kick off at 1.42 pm
Kenya 7s vs. Madagascar kicks off at 4.14 pm
The challenge to Kenya qualifying as the top team is expected from Namibia who are coached by Vuyo Zangqa and Graham Bentz , formerly of the Shujaa technical bench.
